Curb painting for safe, clear traffic zones.

A parking lot's curbs are a silent traffic system. Red means fire trucks need this lane clear. Yellow means don't park here. Blue calls out an accessible area. Drivers respond to those colors instinctively — but only when the paint is bright, unbroken, and applied to the right sections. Faded or chipped curb paint sends mixed signals and can turn into a real problem when a fire marshal walks the lot or an ambulance can't get through.

Fire-lane red

Fire lanes exist so emergency vehicles can reach the building without weaving around parked cars. Most South Dakota jurisdictions require fire lanes to be painted bright red along the curb face and top, often with white "FIRE LANE — NO PARKING" lettering stenciled at regular intervals. No-parking yellow and loading-zone marking

Yellow curbs mark drop-off areas, loading zones, hydrants, and any curb section that needs to stay open for traffic flow. Yellow is also common at intersections inside a lot and at the head of drive aisles where a parked car would block sight lines. We apply full-face yellow so it reads clearly at night and can add "NO PARKING" or "LOADING ZONE" stencils where useful.

Accessible-zone blue

Blue curb paint is used alongside ADA parking stalls and access aisles to reinforce that the area is reserved for accessible use. It's not required on its own, but combined with proper stall marking, signage, and access aisles it gives your accessible parking the strongest possible visual identity. We coordinate curb painting with ADA striping so the whole area looks intentional and finished.

Prep, paint, and finish

Curbs get more abuse than almost any surface in your lot. Winter salt eats at concrete, tire hits chip corners, and old latex paint peels in sheets when it isn't prepped right. We blow debris off the curb, scrape any loose paint, and lay down commercial traffic paint on the top and the vertical face so it reads from every angle. On tough surfaces we can add a bonding primer for extra longevity.

How often to repaint

Curbs generally need a repaint every 12 to 24 months depending on plow contact, sun exposure, and how heavily the lane is used.
